My name is David Oakes and I live in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
I am entirely self-taught, though the usual "like most artists, I always knew... blah, blah, blah" applies here, too. I had an interest in all art forms from an early age, which often got me into trouble - especially when, aged seven, I decided to redecorate my bedroom wall with a dinosaur mural (it got wallpapered over and understandably, I was not happy).
But unlike most other artists, it was many, many years before I really set my heart on this path.
Whilst I've been getting my creative fix from photography - I've been a commercial photographer for over four years now - it was always the canvas I craved. In early 2014, I discovered I could draw on my iPad, and it gave me the bug something rotten.
Buying myself a drawing tablet a few months later started me down this dark, dank path, ever onwards into the flames of Mordor.... Oh, wait - wrong story! Anyway, it seems that these days I spend more time drawing - whether on paper or digitally, than doing photography; not that I mind, of course. Both are enjoyable in their own way.
I finally feel like a large gap in my life has now been filled... With that same thought comes also the regret of having wasted many years not pursuing my dream. This is something I now aim to rectify, and as I push my passion ever forwards, I hope you can accompany me on this journey.
Remember, art is a journey and never a destination.
